MATHEMATICS COURSES

FOR

PROFESSIONAL-TECHNICAL STUDENTS

A new five-term sequence in Technical Mathematics emphasizing problem solving, practical applications related to the field(s) of study requiring these courses, and hands-on work with the relevant mathematics has been developed. This sequence will begin Fall term 1999.

Appropriate calculator usage will be discussed throughout the sequence. These courses will emphasize understanding from basic principles rather than rote application of mathematical procedures.

Programs for which these courses were designed include:

Agricultural & Industrial Equipment

Auto Body & Fender Technology

Automotive Technology

Aviation Maintenance Technician

Construction Technology

Diesel Technology

Electronic Engineering Technician

Electronics Technician

Energy Management Technician

Fabrication/Welding Technology

Flight Technology

Industrial Maintenance

Manufacturing Technology

Microelectronics Manufacturing Tech

Recreational Vehicle Service Technician

Technical Drafting

Welding Processes

(All programs will require a minimum of Math 76/86 level of completion with italicized programs requiring a higher level of technical mathematics than the other programs.)

MTH 076 Applied Geometry for Technicians

Prerequisites Math 020 or Math 020T with a grade of B or pass a placement test

A first course in geometry with an introduction to right triangle trigonometry. Algebraic skills necessary for geometry and other topics will be introduced as needed. The course will also include estimation; percent; measurement in the American and Metric systems; unit analysis with linear, square and cubic units; ratio and proportion, and an introduction to spreadsheets. The geometry covered will include mathematics vocabulary, principles and applications of the following: angle measure; parallel lines; polygons, similarity, and congruence; perimeter and circumference; area and volume of basic figures such as prisms and cylinders; and right triangle trigonometry.

Math 086 Applied Algebra for Technicians

Prerequisites Math 076 with a C or better or pass a placement test

The primary focus in this course will be algebraic skills needed to continue on in the study of applied mathematics. These will include but are not limited to signed numbers, continued work with formulas, integer exponents, scientific notation, the Cartesian coordinate system, linear equations and their graphs, algebraic expressions, and quadratic equations and their graphs. More work will be done with proportions and variation, unit analysis, the Metric system of measurement, and tolerances. Fraction skills will be reviewed as needed. Geometry will be integrated throughout the course and skills learned in Math 75, Applied Geometry for Technicians, will be reviewed periodically (as needed).
